A look back at the workshop on ‘CFD for tunnels and their environment’

A day full of discussions on 3D fluid flow simulation

3D numerical simulation of fluid dynamics, also known as CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), is a calculation tool frequently used in the field of tunnelling, for example in specific hazard studies. However, it remains complex to use and requires specific expertise. In addition, new safety and environmental issues related to tunnels require new uses of CFD, and therefore new skills for users: formation of flammable clouds from natural gas or hydrogen-powered vehicles, dispersion of pollutants in the vicinity of tunnel entrances, etc.

It was therefore the ideal time to bring together underground professionals who use CFD models to discuss current and future practices and needs. This workshop took place on 30th November 2022 at the CETU and brought together around forty participants. As expected, the presentations were of a high technical standard and sparked some very fruitful discussions.

We sincerely thank all the participants and organisers, and hope to organise more workshops on tunnel-related topics in the future. Please feel free to submit your ideas
