Fruitful discussions during the workshop on ‘Safety Management Systems (SMS) in road tunnels’
The CETU organised a workshop on Safety Management Systems (SMS)in road tunnels on 19th September 2024.
The event gathered more than 70 participants, mainly tunnel operators, but also representatives from design offices, fire and rescue services, tunnel safety officers, experts and qualified members of the National Commission for the Evaluation of Road Asset Safety (CNESOR).
The workshop provided an opportunity to present feedback from operators who have implemented a SMS in their organisation and to open up discussions on tunnel SMS in relation to SMS in other areas, (particularly ski lifts), or in other countries, with the example of the tunnels in Brussels. Legal insights were also provided on the benefits of implementing an SMS for an operator.
Finally, a round table discussion concluded the day by sharing the contributions of the SMS to the current road tunnel safety approach and identifying potential obstacles and key factors for successfully implementing road tunnel safety management systems.
