Information on CETU’s waterproofing appraisals

The CETU’s Waterproofing Technical AppraisalCommission, created in June 2001, has established a procedure for the appraisal of waterproofing processes and systems used in underground structures1. The technical appraisal process provides project managers with information on the performance of these processes, in addition to how and under what conditions they should be applied.

The Commission has drawn up guidelines for the examination of requests for technical appraisals. To date, the guidelines include a reference system for the following families of waterproofing processes:

  • PVC-P geomembrane,
  • bituminous geomembrane,
  • single-layer asphalt-based processes,
  • double-layer asphalt-based processes,
  • single-layer prefabricated asphalt-coated sheeting (FPA),
  • prefabricated single-layer sheeting (FPM),
  • liquid waterproofing systems (SIL),
  • liquid sealing systems (SEL),
  • bentonite geosynthetics (GSB),
  • compressible segment joints,
  • mixed segment joints,
  • thin coatings.

The procedure for obtaining a CETU technical appraisal consists of four stages, namely:

  1. Admissibility of the application - Submission of the technical file
  2. Examination of the technical file and visit to the manufacturing plant - Establishment of the test programme
  3. Conclusion of laboratory tests - draft technical assesment
  4. Acceptance and publication of the appraisal.

The conditions for issuing a CETU technical appraisal are described in the ‘guidelines to applying for a technical appraisal’ drawn up and approved by the Commission.
