Regulatory signage
There is no specific written “emergency call station” sign. Their location is indicated by a pictogram of the equipment that they contain, namely a telephone call box (Article 92-1 of Part Five of the Interministerial Instruction on Road Signage).
In tunnels, two CE2a signs must be installed opposite the emergency telephone: one visible in the direction of traffic, the other in the opposite direction.
In tunnels, the CE2a sign is not generally used as an advance warning sign. However, in the event of insufficient or delayed visibility of the CE2a position sign, it may be used as an advance warning sign. It must be supplemented by the M1 sign.
Fire-fighting equipment (Article 92-25)
Signs indicating fire-fighting equipment available for use by users are mandatory in tunnels. They must be provided by means of the CE29 sign. If the fire-fighting equipment is installed at an emergency lay-by, it must be indicated by means of the C8 sign, supplemented by the M9f sign (see Article 70-6 §1).
Two CE29 signs must be installed at the equipment’s location, directly opposite the device: one visible in the direction of traffic, the other in the opposite direction.
The CE29 sign is not generally installed as an advance warning sign.
Regulatory signage for emergency exits (Article 92-26.§1 of Part Five of the Interministerial Directive on Road Signage)
Signage for emergency exits leading to the open air, to a parallel tunnel or gallery, or to a room providing shelter for users is mandatory. It must be provided by means of CE30-type signs.
A CE30a sign and a CE30b sign must be installed at the exit location: one visible in the direction of traffic, the other in the opposite direction. The CE30 sign must be installed on the door leading to the emergency exit.
Pedestrian signage for emergency exits is mandatory. It must be provided using Dp2a and Dp2b signs.
A Dp2a sign and a Dp2b sign are installed together, parallel to the carriageway, every 25 metres.
Regulatory signage for emergency lay-bys (Article 70-6 §1- of Part Five of the Interministerial Instruction on Road Signage).
In tunnels, signage for emergency lay-bys is mandatory. This must be provided by means of sign C8, which must be installed at the location of the lay-by.
If the emergency lay-by has an emergency exit, sign C8 must be accompanied by sign CE30. If it is not possible to install both signs for technical reasons, only sign CE30 shall be installed.
Sign C8 must be supplemented by sign M9e if the emergency lay-by has an emergency telephone. It must be supplemented by sign M9f if the emergency lay-by has an emergency telephone and fire-fighting equipment accessible to road users.
Sign C8 is not generally used as advance warning signage due to the short distance between the equipment to be indicated and the difficulties involved in installing the signage.
However, if the visibility conditions for the C8 sign are insufficient or delayed, or if the C8 sign has been replaced by a CE30 type sign, the C8 sign may be installed as advance warning signage. In this case, it must be supplemented by the M1 sign.
Sign visibility
Article 90.2 of Part 5 of the interministerial directive specifies that when CE29, CE30a and CE30b signs are installed in tunnels, they must be illuminated and retro-reflective.
Dp2a and Dp2b signs, on the other hand, are retro-reflective or illuminated.
