A new guide on automatic incident detection through image analysis in road tunnels

Automatic incident detection (AID) through image analysis plays a highly important role in assisting the operation of road tunnels, and many are now equipped with this technology.

Feedback shows that video surveillance coupled with an AID system is the primary means of detecting significant incidents. To ensure safe tunnel operation, it is therefore essential to have a reliable, high-performance and sustainable AID system.

This handbook provides recommendations for the design, installation, validation and maintenance of ITS systems in road tunnels to help ensure their performance over time. Intended for project owners, operators, design offices, equipment suppliers and integrators, it replaces the CETU information document published in 2015.

This new guide details:

  • incidents to be detected in road tunnels,
  • AID equipment and its operating mode
  • information on required performance
  • installation and performance validation tests for the system
  • general principles in terms of cybersecurity and operational safety
  • operations to be carried out during the lifecycle of the tunnel to maintain AID efficiency.
