An "enlightening" workshop !
Around a hundred people gathered in Bron on 26th May 2026 for a workshop on road tunnel lighting, co-organised by the CETU and the Cluster Lumière Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
Following a review of the fundamental principles of road tunnel lighting and the regulations in force, the first part of the morning was devoted to technological developments: LEDs and their control systems, changes in installations, and a focus on other types of lighting deployed in tunnels (niche lighting, exit lighting, bollard lighting, etc.).
Changes in practices during the various phases of a lighting project were then discussed, with a reminder of the importance of properly taking into account the influence of road surfacing in design studies and the value of creating prototypes. Feedback from case studies also highlighted the need to adapt the implementation of lighting solutions to operational constraints.
The afternoon gave way to discussions on the energy efficiency of lighting equipment, with examples of measures leading to energy savings, using the Foix tunnel (DIRSO) as a case study. The benefits of conducting a life-cycle analysis of equipment as part of a proactive approach were also presented.
The day concluded with a round-table discussion on retrofitting as a potential solution for the future.
The numerous and highly interesting discussions between project owners, operators, design consultancies, manufacturers, integrators and technical experts will provide valuable input within the scope of the revision of the CETU’s lighting guidelines.
The CETU would like to thank the Cluster Lumière as well as all the speakers and participants for this successful day!
