CETU aims to provide specialised technical expertise and support all underground stakeholders through its four fundamental missions.
Establish standards of professional practice
Through its institutional role and extensive experience in supporting projects, the CETU develops regulations, standards and technical guidelines applicable to underground works.
Attentive to the requirements of all stakeholders, it contributes to the development of professional practices and ensures their dissemination, understanding and use.

Improve knowledge
Research and knowledge production, constitute a significant part of CETU’s activities, with permanent feedback from stakeholders chanelling research and development actions

Coordinate professional networks
As a representative of the State within the tunnelling community, the CETU helps to bring together stakeholders at a national and international level.It facilitates collaborations, trains professionals, makes its experience and expertise available to its partners and actively contributes to the technical output of professional networks.

Aid underground projects and support tunnels in service
Drawing on its multidisciplinary engineering skills, the CETU is involved in tunnel construction and refurbishment projects. It also contributes to underground asset management and the safe operation of tunnels.
- Decisional aid to public authorities,
- Support for tunnel owners, project managers, tunnel operators and contractors,
- Assistance in the development of asset management policies,
- Inspections to assess the condition of tunnels,
- Safety audits.
