The CETU attended day of fruitful discussions on excavated materials
The Centre of Expertise in the Subsurface Environment (PoCES) and the University of Lorraine organised the 3rd edition of the ‘Underground experts seminar’ on Tuesday 7th July 2026.
This event, which took place at Andra, focused on the challenges and innovations in the field of excavated materials from underground works and brought together 65 participants.
The CETU gave a presentation on future regulatory adaptations of the AFTES technical recommendation on excavated materials, alongside Nathalie MONIN (WSP), chair of AFTES Working Group 35.
A second presentation by the CETU provided a better understanding of "How Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) can act as a decision-making tool when comparing excavated materials management solutions, help to optimise their re-use and reduce the environmental impacts of underground projects."
The CETU also took part in the round-table discussion alongside TELT, EGIS, UBY and the University of Lorraine, providing an opportunity to highlight the usefulness of LCA, as well as the potential difficulties in its implementation and the prospects for the development of the approach.
This participation enabled professionals specialising in excavated materials from underground works to gather for some very fruitful discussions and also provided an opportunity to visit Andra’s underground laboratory in Bure.
