A new PIARC report on the sustainability of tunnel operation

PIARC (World Road Association) has just published a briefing note in English on the sustainable operation of road tunnels.. As part of the 2024-2027 work cycle, this document is the first deliverable from Working Group 1 ‘Sustainable Operation of Road Tunnels’ of Technical Committee 4.4 ‘Tunnels’, in which CETU participates. This group is led by René List (ASFINAG, Austria) and Frédéric Waymel (EGIS, France).

The publication brings together some twenty case studies from around the world. They illustrate concrete approaches to designing more energy-efficient tunnels, reducing their energy consumption, strengthening their resilience and improving their day-to-day operation. CETU contributed to several of these studies, notably on the life cycle analysis of equipment, monitoring the energy consumption of a French tunnel and passive ventilation optimisation.
Aimed at tunnel managers, designers and operators, this note aims to share feedback and support industry players in moving towards more sustainable operation of infrastructure. A comprehensive technical report will complement this initial publication.
