Twelve years after the initiative was launched, what lessons can be learned from road tunnel equipment inspections?

On 28th November 2024, the underground engineering community gathered for a workshop organised by the CETU on the subject of road tunnel equipment inspections.

Twelve years after the publication of the guidelines on this topic (Fascicule 40), the aim of this workshop was to highlight the role of equipment inspections in asset and safety management, in order to facilitate the adoption of the approach by the profession and to identify the need for changes in technical recommendations.

The presentations by the speakers and the numerous discussions that followed reaffirmed the usefulness of these inspections, which extend beyond regulatory requirements. Indeed, they are an essential element in the development of an asset management policy and contribute to the cycle of continuous safety improvement.

The approach is now sufficiently mature to identify areas for improvement that were discussed during the very fruitful exchanges between the 70 participants: quality of input data, management of co-activities, representativeness of sampling, etc.

The lessons learned from this workshop will feed technical recommendations with the aim of achieving greater harmonisation in the quality of equipment inspections for all road tunnels.

The CETU would like to warmly thank all the participants who made this day a success!
