Underground structures in the nuclear industry: a look back at the ITA COSUF workshop
ITA COSUF and Nagra organised a workshop entitled ‘Exploring the challenges of operational safety in complex underground facilities for the nuclear industry’ on 11th and 12th September 2025 in Zurich.
On the first day, highly informative presentations and an interesting visit to the Mont Terri underground laboratory provided a better understanding of the safety issues and specificities associated with the operation of these types of infrastructure that operate on a timescale unprecedented for the underground community!
The second day provided road tunnel safety officers with an opportunity to meet and prepare, among other things, for the next TSO Forum, which is scheduled to be held in Tromsø (Norway) in 2026.
In parallel, a very fruitful brainstorming session with the activity groups was also organised, in order to identify current and future issues and challenges for the safe operation of underground structures, with a view to identifying future courses of action for ITA COSUF (chaired by Eric Premat, CETU).
Finally, the General Assembly and Steering Board meetings were also held, providing an opportunity to review the activities of the past year and look ahead to promising actions and events in the future!
